1. The term Arab-Sasanian covers the period circa 651-794 (AH 31-AH 178) and is used for early Islamic coins with Pahlavi and/or Arabic legends which were struck in the Sasanian fashion with the conventional Sasanian portrait on the obverse and on the reverse with a Zoroastrian fire-altar and two attendants. These coins were issued by the Arabs and Muslim authorities who governed the Sasanian provinces after the overthrow of the Sasanian empire. This coin type persisted in the eastern provinces of the caliphate for almost 200 years. The Yazdgird Era, commonly abbreviated as YE, is the first era inscribed on Tabaristan coins and on some Arab-Sasanian coins. YE1 (ie. year 1 of the Yazdgird Era) corresponds to AD 632/633, the first regnal year of the last Sasanian ruler Yazdgird III (632/3-651).
